When to go
The best time to visit Paris is late spring or fall. The weather is pleasant and the city is abuzz with festivals and celebrations.
Before April, things can get a bit chilly, and after October, a little gray and rainy.
Avoid August when the city generally shuts down as Parisians take their summer vacations. Many store and restaurants close during this time.
If you can ignore the weather, winter is the cheapest time to visit Paris.
Key annual events
Paris Fashion Week: (early September) Porte de Versailles hosts the final leg of a worldwide tour of fashion designers and models as they showcase their latest creations.
Fete de la Musique: (21 June) Musicians from all over the world perform at a variety of venues around the city in this annual celebration of music held on the longest day of the year.
Bastille Day: (14 July) The most important holiday in France remembers the French Revolution storming the Bastille, marking the nation?s independence. Dancing, military parades and ceremonies dance along the Place de la Bastille and the Champs Elysees.
Autumn Festival: (September – December) A number of venues host a four month long arts festival that includes dramatic performances, movies and live concerts. It is the largest festival of its kind in the world.

Getting around
The Metro: One of the oldest and best systems in the world, there are more than 300 stops on the underground trains’ routes.
Buses: A great way to familiarize yourself with the city, buses are easy to use and an entertaining way to get around.
Taxis: There are more than 15,000 taxis in Paris and they’re relatively inexpensive.
Biking and walking: Maps of bike routes around the city are available from tourist offices.
Cultural sensitivities
Smoking: Not allowed in public places.
Dressing: When visiting the many Parisian churches and cathedral, dress conservatively and avoid flash photography indoors, unless otherwise told, to remain respectful.
Tipping: Restaurants and cafes impose a mandatory 15% service charge, required by law.
Dangers and hazards
As with any big city, take all precautions to ensure you and your belongings are safe from the usual predators, i.e. pickpockets and bag snatchers, who are most prevalent at Metro train stations.
