Finally, after SEVEN weeks of non-stop exam, (not literally, it was like either one or two exams in every week) I’m free! Just for some time, though. I had Paediatrics exam earlier this afternoon. Alhamdulillah, the questions were…bearable.
There were a few questions regarding cardiac disorders. So, as the title says, this will be a post regarding the heart.
According to Lissauer and Clayden Paediatrics textbook, the most common congenital heart lesions can be divided into:
Left-to-right shunts (breathless)
- Ventricular septal defect, VSD
- Persistent ductus arteriosus, PDA
- Atrial septal defect, ASD
Right-to-left shunts (blue)
- Tetralogy of Fallot
- Transposition of great arteries
Common mixing (breathless and blue)
- Atrioventricular septal defect
Outflow obstruction in a well child (asymptomatic with a murmur0
- Pulmonary stenosis
- Aortic stenosis
Outflow obstruction in a sick neonate (collapsed with shock)
- Coarctation of aorta
Tetralogy of Fallot consists of:
(use PROVE mnemonics), Pulmonary stenosis, Right ventricular hypertrophy, Over-riding aorta, Ventricular septal defect
