Imagine Dragons – It’s Time

3 Oct

I recently discovered this song through a channel I subscribed on YouTube, Ratham Stones. They made a pretty good cover of this song. And I realised, from the comments, that this song is used for The Perks of Being A Wallflower trailer. I can recall that I once tried to find out what song it was but I couldn’t. Now I know!

Can’t wait to watch the movie. I’ve read the book when I was in my 3rd year of med school. I got the book shipped to Poland the year before LOL. The movie is released about a week ago I guess, in the USA. But in the UK, probably a few days from now.

So, updates on my first few days of school: Child & Adolescent Psychiatry is indeed interesting. Our lecturer (also a psychiatrist of course) brought us to the ward and showed us around. We were lucky that a 16-year-old patient, a boy, agreed to have a chat with us. At first, we got to know him, ask him his hobby and stuff. He likes loves Heavy Metal. He knows the history, he knows the tour dates and their shows. He plays drums and guitar, and he also sings. He speaks good english. No Polish accent, in fact sometimes I can hear the British and American accent.

We noticed that he’s having some problems in socializing. He seemed to think that people don’t understand him, people don’t like him. We asked about his experience in the hospital but he refused to share any of it, with a reason that it’d make him unhappy and might just cry.

We asked him what other things that he’s interested in besides music, he said he also loves spending time with some friends and when he’s asked about how he would like to spend his time with his friends, he went back to speaking about music. He said he’ll perform his music, his friends would listen etc.

When he is asked about his performance in school, he answered with something that is related to music. We tried to asked him about his family but he said only a little about it and changed the topic. He said maybe in the next meeting he would share his problems with us.

Today, we were supposed to meet him again but the doctor said something happened yesterday with him so it was impossible for us to meet him today. Our lecturer said that he has family problems. His parents divorced when he was 6 years old. And before the divorce, there were a lot of quarreling between his parents that he had to witness. Sometimes his father came back drunk and hit his mother. Both his parents had some affairs. After the divorce, his mother had a (few) boyfriends and they also hit his mother.

He was brought to the hospital because of a few events. He once burnt a friend’s hair. His mother sometimes had to call the police when they argue at home.

But well, I can’t blame him of how his personality is right now. Look at all the hard times he had to go through.  I forgot to mention, he’s the only child.

Alright, I have to stop now, I’ll update later. Toodles!

School Starts!

30 Sep

I guess it’s about time for me to do a new post since the last one was way back in August, and it’s now the end of September.

My 4th year of being a medical student starts officially tomorrow. I will have Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, which I think is pretty interesting, as my first class. And I hope it will.

By the way, my summer holiday was kind of awesome. I had my summer clerkships in Hospital Sultan Ismail in two departments, Paediatrics and Internal Medicine. I met new friends there and learnt quite a number of things although I had (or took) only 2 chances to draw blood from patients. It’s pretty late, I know.

The Ramadhan was nice. I had the chances to do the Tarawih in a few mosques with my family. Oh and speaking of Ramadhan, I read this one special novel, a Malay novel, titled Contengan Jalanan by Hlovate. And I would like to quote a very strong phrase from it.

The man who decided to change on the 12th hour dies on the 11th.

I think everyone should read it. Of course this is only applicable for the people who understand Malay.

I went to back to Kelantan, my father’s hometown, during Raya (Eid). The most unforgettable memory was that I had some allergic reactions, some sort of urticaria, during the last few days of Ramadhan AND during the first few days of Raya. The last one I had was when I was in college. That last sentence just sound so weird- twice usage of ‘was’ but whatevs LOL

What else..what else…

Ahh yes, I also get to meet my secondary school friends during our reunion. The last school reunion I went to was back in 2009 if I’m not mistaken. The reunion was very short but it was nice :)

My flight  to Poland was on the 22nd of September. My flights were from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur, then Kuala Lumpur to Frankfurt and finally Frankfurt to Warsaw.

Today, I went to Stadion Narodowy, the National Stadium of Warsaw, and this time I managed to go inside the stadium! The 34th Warsaw Marathon was held in the morning and the end of the marathon was in the stadium. I had written a few posts regarding the stadium and EURO last time. Here are the links

And here are today’s photos:

Wish me luck for my first 4th year class tomorrow!
Cheers~

Warsaw Book Fair & Art Battles 2012

15 May

In the last 3 posts, I mentioned that I had an exam on that day for Pathophysiology. The total questions was 20 and the passing mark was 11. I thought the questions were pretty tough and I didn’t get the chance to browse through all the past year questions that I had with me. Well, it’s not like I didn’t have the time or anything, but I think I kind of wasted it with things that are not important like window-shopping, watching free online movies, reading non-academical books and so on. Well I’m not saying that reading those books are unimportant but maybe it was not that urgent. I could actually read it during my summer break.

But when I think about it again, I guess it was worth it because I don’t want to spend the rest of my medical-student-years just facing medical books days and nights and by that, neglecting other things that I might not have the chance to engage in when I have started working especially in the two-housemen-years.

Wow, look at how I’ve just babbled from one thing to another. Anyways, about the exam, I passed it, Alhamdulillah. There were two person who got 16/20 and one of them was me. I was surprised. Really. Because I don’t think I studied enough. Getting that result didn’t make me feel as satisfied as I am when I get good result after putting so much effort for it. I somehow feel a little bit worried. Yeah, I’m weird. Ok, enough about all these serious talks.

On last Sunday, I went to Warsaw Book Fair. There were still many people even though it was the final day for that event. It started on Thursday. It was raining (but not heavily) when I reached Palace of Culture & Science. I paid the reduced entrance fee for 5 zlotty on account that I’m a student, and entered the book fair. So many booths, but unfortunately for me, they are practically all selling Polish books except for two, American Bookstore booth and there’s this one Turkish booth named Sozler Publications.

I bought 3 books, Catching Fire, Mocking Jay and Terry Pratchet’s The Unseen Academicals. I also bought this colourful magnetic bookmarks for 4.50 zlotty and I bought a book from the Turkish booth titled The Miracles of Muhammad and received The World Is Reading Risale-i Nur for free.

My first Terry Pratchet’s (lame, I know)

They are pretty useful and practical too!

Said Nursi’s

After the book fair, I went to Arkadia to buy the ink for the printer and to watch the Art Battles 2012 held there from 12-26 May 2012. It turned out that Saturn ran out of my printer’s ink and I bought a red Sony headphone which I have been eyeing for it since last year! Since I don’t have the plugin to make multiple photo galleries per post, I will upload the photos I took during the art battle in the next post. This irritates me a lot. Not being able to have multiple galleries, I mean.

Here’s the link to the next post with the photos.

How I Spent My Spring Break Holiday

8 May

I feel like I really have to post about what I’ve been doing during my spring break. I’ll lose the memories if  I don’t. But they are nothing if compared to that of people who travelled to some tourists spots in Europe in this flower-blooming season. BUT (simultaneous ‘but’s, yes, I’m aware of that) I am very well-satisfied with how I spent the days in it.

I guess I will start off by writing briefly about the whereabouts of time I was in. Two weeks before spring break was the easter break. During the easter break, I occupied my time with studying Microbiology after I had Explorace game in Warsaw among other Malaysians here. When school started, I had Microbe exam. The week after, I had Polish exam. Then spring break began!

I actually started my own personal spring break after the polish exam. (Not that I’ve travelled somewhere but you know, when you’re done with some major exams, you feel free. That kind of thing). But looking back to my personal calendar, I started the spring break right after the Microbe exam because I watched a bunch of movies after that, went to Powitaj Puchar etc. Come to think of it, I remember ditching studying Polish because of Powitaj Puchar. Yeah, I didn’t care how long I had to queue to take photo with THE Henri Delaunay Trophy.

Okay, so week 1 Easter break, week 2 Microbe exam, week 3 Polish and week 4 spring break. And like I’ve mentioned, I started my own spring break way earlier, and that was in…week 2, after the Microbe exam.

After the Polish exam (week 3),

  1. I went for window shopping, and eventually bought 2 good books, The Alchemist and The Hunger Games
  2. April birthday bash held among my Malaysian batch mate. I received some presents ;)
  3. and again, watched a bunch of movies online
  4. started watching Vampire Diaries series and it was really addictive!

About the two good books I bought, I didn’t plan on buying books but as I passed by the American Bookstore in Arkadia, I saw Hunger Games trilogy books being displayed. (This is the first time I saw it in Warsaw, so that made me excited) I made my way into the bookstore and found The Catcher in the Rye! I’ve been googling it for quite some time and I was quite excited to find it in one of Warsaw’s bookstores. That means I don’t have to pay for any shipping fees. I’ve put the book in some virtual ‘basket’ online earlier. Can’t remember though whether it was Amazon or Book Depository.

American Bookstore Arkadia

Anyway, I took hold of The Catcher in The Rye, made one long round in the bookstore but still couldn’t find the Hunger Games trilogy books. Then I saw The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. As expected, I took hold of it. I browsed through other Coelho’s books. Then I found the Hunger Games! It then joined the other two books in my arms. I (luckily) somehow, know how much cash I have in my purse which was only 70 zlotty. I made up my mind on which book to buy, and only paid for The Hunger Games and The Alchemist.

Just three days ago, I bought The Catcher in the Rye and the combination of book 1 and 2 of Vampire Diaries. And by now, I have successfully finished both The Alchemist and The Hunger Games. As I have watched the Hunger Games before reading the book, I felt like the reading was very swift. The reason I bought the first 2 volumes of Vampire Diaries series was because of the TV series. That makes it the second book I bought even though I have watched its movie/TV. The first is The Hunger Games.

Books I recently bought

I don’t really prefer to buy the books after watching the movie/TV series because I feel like it won’t be adventurous anymore knowing how the story will end. I like surprises, in this case. But, since Catching Fire film will be next in line, I thought, why not read the trilogy? And this goes to the Vampire Diaries as well. Its TV series is now in the end of season 3 and by seeing how the story goes, I foresee that there will be season 4 (I’m too lazy to Google this). So this means that I still have the chance to read first before watching the rest of the coming seasons.

Ok, I’m in a dilemma now. After writing all this, I don’t know if I should read or watch first. Because a few years back, I was so disappointed with -if I’m not mistaken- the New Moon film. The novel was good but the movie was bad. I don’t know if it’s the effect of reading first or it’s the movie itself that sucks. Oh no…I don’t want to ruin Vampire Diaries and Hunger Games sequels :(

Read first or watch first? Hmm..

You know what, I’ll make the decision at the end of this post. Lets get this over with.

  • 26th April- first half of  VD season 1 (this is on Thursday, still in school days)
  • 27th April- second half of season 1 (Friday, when the spring break really starts)
  • 28th April- first half of season 2
  • 29th April- second half of season 2
  • 30th April- one third of season 3
  • 1st May- some episodes of season 3 and started reading the Alchemist
  • 2nd May- remaining parts of VD season 3, went shopping, visited a friend’s house and helped her prepare dinner
  • 3rd May- went to Wilanow Palace, Old Town and the brand new National Stadium in Warsaw (where the Euro football match will be held this June!)

I think this post is really long! LOL

I’m going to continue anyway.

So, Vampire Diaries. How did I start watching the TV series? Well there’s this site where I watch movies online. I got bored with the movies they published online that are not visually clear. (This is something you have to put up with when watching movies online). Then in some such way, I clicked on the Vampire Diaries. I used to had the thought that VD is another vampire film that is trying to get viewers during Twilight’s popularity. But now, it’s proven otherwise. Even better!

When I watched the first episode, and when I knew that Stephan is one of the main protagonist, I felt like not watching VD at all because his looks reminded me of Edward of Twilight. I sort of hate don’t like Edward. (No offense to any Edward or Stephan fan). But as soon as Damon Salvatore came out (although he seemed to be the antagonist at first), I was determined to watch VD till the end! And as the story develops, I began to like Damon! Who wouldn’t? :D

Damon Salvatore

If you haven’t and want to watch the Vampire Diaries online, here’s the link.

To sum up, during the spring break, I spent my time watching 3 seasons of Vampire Diaries TV series, finished 2 good books, The Alchemist and The Hunger Games, went shopping, visited the Wilanow Palace, Old Town and Stadion Narodowy (National Stadium). I will upload the photos in the next post.

And my decision is…to go with the flow. If I have the time, I’ll read it. If I don’t then I’ll end up watching the movie first before reading it. Which is fine by me.

Updates

7 Jan

It has been a long time since my last post- which was last year. It’s now 2012! A lot of things happened since my last post. Well, they were not that important, really.

The reason I haven’t been posting stuff here is because as soon as I got back from Nice and Monaco, I had a problem with my internet service. The internet guy had to come twice to fix the internet. So I was like wasted my one week (kind of) without internet.

I could have posted many things here :( I was frustrated. There were so many things I wanted to share but unfortunately I couldn’t, but I did save all the interesting stuff, mainly videos, in my ‘reading list’ so I can post it later on which is what I’m going to do for the coming posts and that will be very soon from now.

So what did I do when the internet gone wrong? I watched some of the movies in my hard disc and that include Hanna, Sherlock Holmes, Forrest Gump, Season of the Witch and Push.

I made my Doctor-Patient role play essay.

I also read The Perks of Being A Wallflower. I finished it in one day- couldn’t let go of the book. The movie will be released soon. Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller will be in it. Can’t wait for the movie!

I made Nasi Lemak and my first self-made smoked salmon-cream cheese tortilla! (And now I’m addicted to smoked salmon) There were other dishes too but they were not some major dishes.

When the internet was ok I watched Final Destination 5 which was, in my opinion, all crap because you can predict everything. I also watched Ombak Rindu. It was pretty good.

In this week, I watched  Cinderella (2000) on Monday, studied Polish on Tuesday and Wednesday, Polish exam on Thursday, after the exam I made my first self-made baked penne and I can say that it was a success :)  And today, I went for a bowling tournament and my team won first place! I didn’t expect to win but looks like luck was on our side.

Tomorrow, I will play basketball for my team (red team). These games are organised by the Malaysians’ student association here.

See you in next post!
